1 Waltzing Matilda

With the Mob
The exploits of drovers on the immense stock routes of Australia are legendary. The canniest of them all was Sydney Kidman who realised how to use the potential of The Channel Country. When drought struck one of his properties, he moved stock out to where monsoon rains in the Far North had seeped down dry creekbeds to form the billabongs of The Overflow. Here the flocks found new grass in abundance.Having left home at thirteen, with five shillings and a one-eyed horse, Kidman became the largest landholder in the then British Empire. The painting was published as Plate 4 in The Painted Swagman - A Tribute to Waltzing Matilda.
