2 Waltzing Matilda

Bush Tucker_print,WaltzingMatilda,Gauvin Bush Tucker

On the left of the painting are seen the vegetable foods gathered by the  women. Seeds of the nardoo (a water plant) are gathered in a bark coolamon.  A "dilly bag" woven from grasses will carry other finds. Animal foods  hunted by the men are shown within the curve of a boomerang. The timeless spirit of a Songman invests the red sands of the vast central desert, watched over by Bingil (the wedge-tail eagle) an ancestral creator spirit. Below the stars of the Southern Cross, ancient rock art signals the human need of food for the soul. This painting was published as Plate 26 in The Painted Swagman - A Tribute to Waltzing Matilda.
