The Drover

During the 1890s, as in every global recession before and since, economic disaster became personal tragedy for vast numbers of ordinary people. Among them is this drover, so far unlucky in his search for work. Meeting up with some Overlanders bringing cattle from Queensland, he sells them his mount and packhorse. His hopes still  undefeated, he hangs onto his stocksaddle as he walks away towards the town. Here he will take any job he can find, until he can again be what he is - a drover. This painting was reproduced as Plate 20 in Banjo Paterson's People.
