In a twist of fate, the famous clipper Cutty Sark  was commissioned just as the era of transport by sail was superseded. Refrigerated steam vessels took over the export of perishables when Australia perfected a method of freezing meat for the lucrative markets of London. Getting the goods to the seaports remained the problem. In a country of vast plains wracked by dust storms in drought, by mud bogs in flood, the teamsters of the wool wagons, and their magnificent horses, were a breed apart. Here, the boss takes time for an encouraging word to his young offsider. The painting was published as Plate 24 in Banjo Paterson's Australians.
